Hockey analyst Don Cherry had us at “poppy.” He lost us at “You people.” “You people” is the refuge of the xenophobe — it’s a narrow, small-minded, racist identifier that hurts, perhaps surprisingly, each time. The poppy draws us into an uneasy but grateful embrace, perhaps, not often enough.
