After Val-Jean McDonald died of cancer at the age of 81, hundreds of people gathered to pay their last respects and hear her son Richard, a pastor, proudly recall her years with the post office and how she had raised eight boys in a small flat in Harlem. The casket was open beside the altar and many had filed past before the funeral service.
