| Colin Dexter created Inspector Morse in his own image |
|
Dexter was amiably self-deprecating, insisting much of his success was the result of outrageous good luck. He loved to tell stories with a gentle dig at himself. He had no pretensions, no ambition to delve deep into twisted human psychology or set up inventively gory killings, like the American writers of crime noir.
