Winds that reached a peak gust of 76 mph ripped roofs off buildings, wrenched trees out of the ground and toppled over power lines. The damage kept police, highway departments and crews from National Grid and NYSEG busy throughout the day Wednesday and into Thursday, and the cleanup is expected to continue for several days.
