Peter Abrahams knew poverty, destitution and apartheid as he grew up in South Africa. Apartheid is an Afrikaner word for ‘separation’. True, Abrahams did not suffer apartheid as badly as most of the others in South Africa because he was regarded as ‘coloured’.
