Before becoming a Catholic priest, Chung Viet Nguyen was a malaria parasite specialist (1980) and dermatologist (1993). He and his entire family followed Ancestor worship for many generations. In 1994, he converted and was baptized into Roman Catholicism. Afterwards, he applied to attend Congregation of the Mission of St Vincent de Paul.
