He began his career as a reporter with the Irish News and subsequently worked for BBC NI and UTV. He retired as news editor at Citybeat radio in 2011. Gerry Carson, chairman of the Irish Executive Council of the NUJ, extended sympathy to David's son Richard, himself a reporter with BBC NI.
