Missionaries were the first to introduce the newspaper into West Africa. Media historians (Fred Omu, Frank Ugboajah, etc.) record that the first newspaper in Nigeria was established in December 1859 by a Church Missionary Society (CMS) evangelist from Leicester, England: the Reverend Henry Townsend.
