10. 16 January, 1922. The day British soldiers leave Dublin Castle, the historic seat of British rule in Ireland, for the last time. The newly independent Irish government begins to make its mark visible, issuing Irish stamps (the first batch of which were simply overprinted on British ones) and painting the red post-boxes green.
