Asked why local people would share their knowledge with a Pākehā, Rob says it had a lot to do with the fact that he was a priest. “For the people on the river, that was significant. I understood the spiritual aspects. Without wairua, you’ve got nothing.” He spent a lot of time working with a local kaumatua helping gather plants for rongoā Māori.
