I tried many things. By my mid-20s, I'd had more than 30 jobs. I'd been a dustman, milkman, postman and a window cleaner. I'd worked at the slipper factory in Bath Street, Rolls-Royce, Midland Mills Ltd, Keillers sweet factory and the Co-op bakery. I can claim, with little fear of contradiction, I was pretty useless at all of them.
