Eugene Byrne, with the aid of Post readers who have written in in the past with their memories, looks back on the first major night-time Bristol Blitz air raid and the start of the Blitz Winter of 1940-41

When the all-clear sounded we gathered, along with our neighbours, at the top of the lane, Meridian Terrace, which led to our home in Pinegrove Place, Bishopston. Looking towards town, across the Cheltenham Road railway bridge and over the roofs, a bright red glow was spreading in all directions. And the smell - it was awful.
