After years of religious persecution, a group of English Catholics attempted to blow up Parliament on November 5, 1605. Known as The Gunpowder Plot, the bid failed when one of the conspirators - Guy Fawkes - was discovered in a basement with barrels of gunpowder beneath the Parliament in London.
