He was hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro with Covid-19 in September and died of it on Oct. 21, according to his website , making him Brazil’s first sitting senator to succumb to the virus. He was 83. Several retired senators in Brazil have died of the disease, and President Bolsonaro contracted the virus but recovered .
