Stan Laurel. Though born in Ulverston, Cumbria, Stan Laurel grew up mostly in the North East, attending King James I Grammar School in Bishop Auckland and the King’s School in Tynemouth. He became a popular musical hall entertainer at the start of the 20th century, before trying his luck in Hollywood.
