Thirty years ago yesterday – on December 10, 1988 – (almost) all of the Arab world cheered as Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf presented the first Nobel Prize in literature to Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) via his two daughters, who attended the festivities in Stockholm for him.
