Raised in rural Alabama , John Lewis knew early on that he was no farmer. He couldn’t stand the butchering of animals, had no love of manual work and instead aspired to the pulpit. At church, he would absorb the pastor’s sermon and then reimagine it at home, preaching to—and sometimes baptizing—the chickens on his parents’ property.
