Prime Minister Tony Abbott has refused to deny reports Australian border officials paid people smugglers to turn around an asylum seeker boat. The Sydney Morning Herald reported earlier this week six people smugglers from the Indonesian island of Rote were paid $6500 each in late May to return asylum seekers intercepted north of Australia.
