For the first few decades of its existence, radio was not a conservative medium: Progressive figures like Huey Long and Father Charles Coughlin used broadcasts to foment support for labor rights and railroad nationalization, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt recorded weekly “fireside chats” to shore up support for the New Deal.
