Melba was a regular performer in charity concerts in aid of organisations such as the Red Cross, and particularly Belgium. She had made her operatic debut in Brussels, and after the German invasion of Belgium early in the war, her deep affection for that nation saw Melba throw herself into supporting the Belgian Relief Fund.
