Many will hardly remember a time before the M5 existed. The motorway was officially opened on May 27, 1977, by then-Prime Minister James Callaghan. But the first piece of tarmac was laid 15 years before that - the first steps in creating the now well-travelled road from Birmingham to Exeter. It was built in giant sections.
