Cummings, who died in October, was chairman of one of the U.S. House committees that led an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump and was a formidable advocate for the poor in his Maryland district. Another influential political figure, U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens , died in July.
