This year was a mix of surprises, stasis, and slow burns in Eurasianet's core coverage region. The biggest surprise - judging from readership data - was the sudden announcement by Kazakhstan's Nursultan Nazarbayev that he was retiring after almost three decades running Central Asia's richest country.
