I t took six weeks of searching the streets and imagining the worst kind of assaults under overpasses before Cindy Cates’ family heard from her. Her mother had stopped sleeping. Her sister had driven around downtown Houston looking for her, combing the clusters of homeless people who stay by the Greyhound bus station.
