Highlights in history on this date. 1789 - Benjamin Franklin writes a letter to a friend in which he says: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." 1909 - Some 250 miners die in a fire and explosion at the St Paul Mine at Cherry, Illinois. 1914 - Greece and Turkey sign peace treaty.
