Discussing the death of Mr Byrne with my mother on Monday evening, she told me: "Gay saved my sanity." In the early 1980s, my parents moved house to an area just outside Cork city which, at the time, was not on a bus route and relatively remote. My mother, who had grown up in the city, hated it.
