, who has died at the age of 85, was the undisputed leading figure in the history of Irish broadcasting, and played a hugely influential role in the transformation of attitudes in the latter part of the 20th century. In a career that spanned six decades, he was father figure, confessor, inquisitor and entertainer, all rolled into one.
