Born in Dublin in 1934, he grew up in Rialto in the Irish capital and was the youngest in a family of four boys and one girl. He was married to harpist and broadcaster Kathleen Watkins with whom he had two children.
His love for broadcasting began at an early age when he was taken on a school trip....
