The Lachner piano had reached the end, figuratively and literally. Sure, to the untrained eye it looked in tip-top shape. But looks, as any plastic surgeon worth his/her scalpel can attest, can be deceiving. Several of the piano’s keys no longer functioned, and the ones that did combined to sound like a chorus of lovelorn tomcats.
