“Hal” was born in Toledo, Ohio, on July 16, 1937. As a child, his family moved to the Monadnock Region and he grew up in Dublin. He attended Dublin School and graduated from Philips Exeter Academy in 1954. He graduated from Harvard College in 1958 with a degree in mathematics and earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1961.
