Editors Note: This story was originally published on August 8th, 1982 They were a war generation. They knew the thump of mortars, the scream of rockets, the scorch of flamethrowers. They saw tanks flatten villages and bombers level cities. At home, they waited in line for gasoline and butter. At night, on the coasts, they blackened their windows.
