on June 9, 1862. The very first road race named in its honour took place on June 2, 1962, to commemorate The Blaydon Races' centenary. It started in Prudhoe Street, Newcastle, with 111 competitors and finished in Church Street in Blaydon - won by Tommy Elliot of Gateshead Harriers.
