Mr. Presten got into the game in 1944, selling topical gag lines to a P.R. man, Carl Erbe. In the late 1950s, Café St. Denis on East 53rd Street was getting enough play that Sherman Billingsley, owner of the Stork Club a few doors down, hired Mr. Presten to drum up juice for his famous but fading nightspot.
