At the east end of Austin Avenue, the Square symbolized the old order. Farmers still drove there on weekends for hardware, seed and clothes, or to sell vegetables at the riverside market. On the west side were the Cotton Exchange building left over from Waco’s turn-of-the-century glory days as Texas’ premier cotton town.
