RAY Lawler's Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, which premiered in Melbourne in 1955, continues to be Australia's most popular play, with most sessions of its seasons attracting big audiences. The interest that people had in the play, in this country and overseas, led Lawler to write two prequels in the 1970s, Kid Stakes and Other Times.
