On Jan. 6, 1980, the people of Chapais buried the victims of a horrific New Year’s Day fire. It had broken out after midnight at a New Year’s Eve party in the Opemiska Club, when someone playing with a cigarette lighter ignited dried pine bough holiday decorations.
