I n Pietrasanta, Italy — a small town where Michelangelo used to shop for marble — a tall brick bell tower tolls throughout the day from a church on one side of the historic central square. Several enormous sculptures punctuate the plaza: faceless heads with bizarre hair wrought in brass, iron and steel.
