Monday, November 27 1944, is a date known to many as 'the day the world blew up'. On that day one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history happened on UK soil - and it occurred right here in Staffordshire. The RAF Fauld explosion was caused by the accidental detonation of 4,000 tonnes of ordinance to the east of Hanbury.
