The evening of August 21, 1879 was a very wet, miserable time, especially in the West of Ireland. Summer was drawing to a close with autumn coming in quickly. In the village of Knock in Co Mayo, Mary Beirne and the local priest’s housekeeper Mary McLoughlin were passing by the gable end of the little parish church — a thatched building at the time.
