The third member of the gang was Indianapolis native Clarence Shaffer a car thief at the tender age of 12. Shaffer briefly operated a hamburger stand in Indianapolis and hauled coal with the fourth member of the gang, Charles Geiseking, another petty thief who did a stretch in prison. The four became fast friends and partners in crime.
