Garrison was 22 years old, fresh out of college with a degree in meteorology and a few months away from starting work at the National Weather Service in Birmingham. It was April 8, 1998, a Wednesday night. Garrison was getting ready to leave church in Sylvan Springs, a town just west of Birmingham. And an F5 tornado was lurking a few miles away.
