My 91-year-old mother told me about my late father accepting the challenge of a fair booth boxer, and climbing into the ring to mix it with an old pugilist at a fair on Hanley Park one day in the late 40s. He lost, but gave a good account of himself as he had boxed for his regiment during the war.
