It was a day blessed by glorious spring sunshine and a royal visit – and followed by a night of dark terror that changed Plymouth for ever. The city had suffered 39 German air-raids and considerable damage by the time Thursday March 20, 1941, dawned. That was acknowledged by a morale-boosting visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
