In the first half of the 1960s, television seemed briefly to hold out the promise of what Dennis Potter called a “common culture” that might “slice through all the tedious hierarchies of the printed word”. Seven out of 10 homes now had a TV set and, with only two channels, it could bring the nation together in front of it.
