Maischak has taught in the history department at Fresno State for the past 11 years. Like many academics, he is not on track to receive tenure. It’s a precarious existence. The school hires him on three-year contracts, heavy on teaching requirements and light on time for research or writing. Still, Maischak was content with the gig.
