Aiken, World War II veterans remember D-Day on 75th anniversary
They weren’t with the Allied forces that stormed the beaches of Normandy in 1944. They do, however, remember D-Day. Before a ceremony in Aiken on Thursday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the invasion, several World War II veterans shared their memories of the operation that started the campaign to liberate France and defeat Germany.

A newspaper columnist once wrote that tuning in to one of Bob Smith’s radio stations in western Wisconsin was like “listening to neighbors talking over the back fence.” Smith, who owned and operated seven radio stations in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Florida for almost 60 years, believed radio had the power to unite communities.
