Mutilation 'impossible' to prevent: Bishop
Foreign minister Julie Bishop has urged relatives or friends to blow the whistle on anyone taking children abroad to undergo female genital mutilation. The Australian Federal Police is investigating reports of a Brisbane girl being taken from her home to undergo genital mutilation in Africa.

Fears for missing Aussie hiker
The trio are overdue from an attempt on the summit of the country’s highest peak. Searchers believe the weather will remain poor until New Year’s Day, preventing a search for the trio from resuming. Police have named them as Michael Bishop, 53, from Sydney, and Raphael Viellehner, 58, and his son Johann, 27.

It is hoped two Germans and an Australian missing on New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mount Cook, have dug themselves a shelter and are sitting out a storm hitting the mountain.
