| Environmentalists seek attention to sinking Earth's surface as New Year begins |

Human activities such as rapid and extensive groundwater removal besides natural causes are leading to sinking of the Earth's surface, say researchers. The new phenomenon will affect 635 million people, mostly in Asia, with a total exposed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $9.78 trillion in the next four years, they said as the New Year ushered in.
