Late in November 1943, Chiang Kai-shek, leader of the Republic of China, and his wife Soong Mayling (Madame Chiang) met at Cairo in Egypt with President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to discuss military strategy for the defeat of Japan in the Pacific war and expectations for the structure of postwar East Asia.
