The M-16’s poor showing in Southeast Asia prompted a slew of upgrades to help keep the guns working—and troops alive. In the early 1970s, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency worked on a “Low Maintenance Rifle” concept—or LMR. DARPA thought the new weapon could be a replacement for the troubled M-16 rifle.
